Tooth Extractions in Houston, TX

Though no one wants to have a tooth extracted, there are situations where it becomes necessary for the sake of your overall oral health. Our dentist in 77057 may need to remove teeth due to:

  • Tooth decay: If a tooth has developed decay that is so advanced that neither a filling nor root canal can save it, it will need to be extracted to prevent infection or an abscess.
  • Impacted teeth: in many cases, when wisdom teeth come in, they become impacted (stuck in the jaw or emerge at an improper angle). This can cause pain and swelling and may lead to an infection or the development of a cyst. Wisdom teeth are usually removed to prevent complications.
  • Overcrowded teeth: if there are too many teeth to comfortably fit in the mouth, teeth can be removed to improve your bite. Additionally, baby teeth that don’t fall out when they should need to be removed in order to allow room for the permanent teeth to come in.
  • Braces: occasionally, teeth have to be removed before braces are placed on the teeth.

Houston Tooth Extraction Procedure

Anesthesia can be used for the procedure, whether conscious sedation or general anesthesia. There are two types of tooth extractions. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth (erupted). The dentist near 77057 will loosen the tooth with a tool called an elevator, then remove it with forceps. A more complicated procedure is a surgical extraction, for when the tooth has not fully erupted. This extraction is often performed by an oral surgeon at our dentistry near 77057. It requires a small incision to be made into the gums in order to access the tooth. It may be necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth as well as the tooth itself, or to cut the tooth in half in order to successfully extract it.
