About Periodontal Gum Disease

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal gum disease and is caused when bacteria, plaque, and toxins cause gum irritation, ultimately leading to inflammation and infection. The gums tend to appear red, swollen and inflamed during gingivitis and may even bleed. During the first stage, gingivitis, periodontal disease can be completely reversed and cured.

Early periodontitis is the second stage of periodontal disease and involves the inflammation and infection progressing into the supporting structures of your teeth, typically resulting in gum pockets forming.

Moderate periodontitis is the third stage of periodontal disease where bone loss begins to extend between the roots of the tooth, typically resulting in loose teeth and some potential migration.

Advanced periodontitis is the final stage of periodontal disease which typically results in severe bone loss, receding gums, exposed tooth roots and even tooth loss.
